About the San Rafael Auction Gallery

The San Rafael Auction Gallery's estates auctions have been a source of fine antiques, paintings, decorative arts, estate jewelry and unique items since 1985. The Auction Gallery is located in beautiful Marin County, one of the wealthiest communities on the west coast, 12 miles north of San Francisco and just south of the Napa Valley in the town of San Rafael.

Burton Hem has been an antiques and fine arts dealer for over 30 years and is well known both nationally and abroad for his sterling reputation. In 1985, after closing his large and successful retail antiques store, The San Rafael Trading Company, Burt held his first auction at 634 5th Avenue in San Rafael. Celebrating over twenty years in the same location The San Rafael Auction Gallery holds six Antiques Estates Auctions per year along with a periodic Maritime Antiques Auction.

One of the first to see the potential of online auctions, Burt jumped into eBay Live Auctions in June of 2001. All of his subsequent sales have been “live in real time world wide”. Live online auctions have both leveled the playing field for the provincial auction house and allowed it to compete in an open arena for premier consignments and the best prices. Now that eBay has left the live auction arena, the San Rafael Auction Gallery's auctions are hosted on LiveAuctioneers.com.

The San Rafael Auction Gallery has always been known for its aggressiveness in the marketplace, attention to detail and personalized service to their customers and consignors.

All lots for all auctions are illustrated in color on our website approximately one week before our auctions. Bidding for the auctions is live, absentee and by phone in the gallery and live and by absentee online.
